Twin Applications

A great number of  neuromodulation techniques are currently being used worldwide, many of those are also applied by Twin. Here, you will find some of these techniques, with a short description of the underlying principles and the procedure.

  • Chronic intractable pain. Intractable pains are an important indication for the use of neuromodulation via epidural electrical stimulation or the intraspinal administration of pharmaceuticals. This treatment can alleviate chronic pain in disorders like, radiculopathies, arachnoiditis, failed back surgery syndrome, plexus lesions, peripheral neuropathy, complex regional pain syndromes (Sudeck), ischemic pain, phantom pain and angina pectoris. Furthermore, there is the possibility to help in specific cases of facial pain and several central pain syndromes using motor cortex stimulation.
  • Epilepsy. Epilepsy patients with seizures that cannot, or not sufficiently, be suppressed pharmacologically, are treated in increasing numbers with the electrical stimulation of the vagus nerve. Vagus nerve stimulation as a treatment of refractory epilepsy has become regular treatment in the Netherlands in a limited number of medical centers. This was introduced through a government subsidized quality study from 2002 to 2005 led by Twin.
  • Spasticity. In cases where oral medication does not give adequate control over spasticity and/or has unacceptable side effects, intrathecal administration of baclofen may be an alternative.

In addition to these applications, Twin is actively developing and implementing new neuromodulation applications. Examples of these are vagus nerve stimulation for chronic depression and diaphragm stimulation for ALS patients. For more information please contact us.
